Dear Saint Peter’s parishioners,

It is with very heavy hearts that we write to convey the recent decision of the leadership of Saint Peter’s
that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our beloved Afterworks afterschool program will not reopen this
fall. This decision was not taken lightly but out of an abundance of care and concern for the health of the
staff, children and families of Afterworks.

The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts has directed that all children’s programs in our church
buildings must remain closed at this time and for the foreseeable future. The church leadership also
looked carefully at the growing evidence about the pandemic and its effect on children as well as the
decisions being taken by the Commonwealth and schools in Cambridge and beyond about protecting the
health and wellbeing of all our citizens. All of these factors were carefully weighed in making the
decision to close the Afterworks program.

We know you will join the vestry and the Afterworks Advisory Committee in expressing deep gratitude
to the Afterworks staff—Vyonni De Mel, Katrina Vilensky, and Chirusha De Mel—for their faithful
service in making this afterschool program one of the very best in Cambridge. As the founder of the
program, Vyonni’s engagement and direction for more than 25 years have made this program thrive in
service to all the families who entrusted their children to the care of Afterworks over these many years.
We shall miss the happy voices of all the children, those past and more recent, in our undercroft each
school day.

We so appreciate your prayers and financial support for this program and its service to the children and
families of Cambridge over the many years of its operation.

If you have any questions about this decision, please refer them to Sallie Craig Huber, Chair of the Advisory Committee.

Very sincerely,

The Rev. Derrick Muwina, PhD.
Rector, Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church
